Pros: Low price; small, lightweight; rugged construction; 3x optical zoom; image stabilization; context-sensitive help

Cons: Some photos were darker than expected; video limited to 320x240; burst mode limited to three shots

Verdict: Small and inexpensive doesn't have to be bad?the R742 is well-constructed and produces generally good-quality photos. The image stabilization, shooting modes, and context-sensitive help make this a worthy pick for a beginning digital photographer.

      HP R742

Review summary: Next are two elongated buttons that are aligned vertically near the top right side of the monitor:

Pros: Good image quality when using 7M Best and in bright daylight. Some Scene modes. Very simple to use. 2.5-inch monitor. Compact and metal-clad.

Cons: Monitor difficult to see in daylight. Some noise as of 100 ISO. Compression too strong. Camera returns to the Auto mode and Auto flash when turned off. No optical viewfinder.
