Digital Cameras - Canon PowerShot S500 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Review summary: The quality and versatility of the ELPH series has impressed me from the start, and the 5.0-megapixel S500 doesn't disappoint. The camera's tiny size makes it a travel worthy companion, and the range of features give the camera an edge over many point ...

Verdict: The Canon PowerShot S500 is the latest in the highly popular line of "Digital ELPH cameras from Canon. Canon's name is one of the few needing no introduction in the world of photography: Ask a photographer, be they professional or amateur, to name the ...

Canon USA Powershot S500 Digital Camera Camera

      By Paul Jasper

Review summary: The latest addition to Canon's popular pocket-size Digital Elph line, the $499 Canon PowerShot S500 retains its predecessors' elegantly designed, pocket-size format but adds 5-megapixel resolution.

Verdict: You may need a little time to get used to the S500's dual menu system (now standard on most Canon point-and-shoot digital cameras), but you should soon grow accustomed to their logical organization and find them easy to navigate. Our one quibble with ...

Canon PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH: Canon PowerShot S410 / S500 Digital ELPH

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: So there you have it. I decided to use the S500 as the "model" in the review -- so the photo above is the only place you'll see the S410. Aside from the color of the ring around the lens, they are identical.

Pros: Very good photo quality ; Small, beautiful metal body ; Very fast performance ; Good burst modes (esp. the S500) ; AF-assist lamp ; VGA movie mode (S500 only), although limited compared to competition ; Excellent bundle ; Optional underwater case

Cons: Redeye ; Flimsy plastic doors over battery/memory card compartments ; Sluggish frame rates, recording time limits in movie mode ; Scene modes would be nice

Verdict: Regardless of the speed of the card, you'll find that 32MB is a decent starter size, but you'll definitely want a larger card soon after you get going with the S410 or S500. I recommend a 128MB card for the S410, and a 256MB card for the S500
