Beginner Photographer

By Neil McMahon (20/12/2005)
  • Pros: big screen, excellent resolution, easy interface, compact
  • Cons: battery level and mem. remain indicate, night exposures

A family member has the older Ixus 500, and I thought it was an excellent camera, but the screen was small. When I saw the size of the screen on this one, I wanted it. Everybody comments on the screen size.
This big screen has a 'downfall', only in the form of it being an easy target for damage, so I recommend getting a nice case for it.
I also recommend wrapping the lanyard around your wrist before taking the camera out of the case. It's little heavier than other cameras (not really a bad thing) and the big screen means you need to handle it carefully. I get this impression I will drop it when I take it out of the case, so I tie it to my wrist first.
It has fantastic image quality, and I found the interface intuitive, and easy to use.
I have noticed that I find it difficult to get a good quality 'Night snapshot' as the camera automatically reduces shutter speed to typically 1/8, giving a slightly jittery (and smooth) exposure.

Also, the battery low indicator only comes on when it's about to die, I would like to see a constant battery monitor, to give me a better idea.
Ok, the camera tells you how many shots/time remaining in memory, but I would like to see this in terms of Mb too.

It has a Sport video feature, where the fps is 60 !!, and it gives a super responsive recording, but it chews through the memory at this rate. I got a 1Gb card with it, and in this 60fps mode, ~1Gb is approx. 8.5 mins.
It can record with 640x480 res. @ 30fps, which is more than sufficient. Again, memory hungery numbers.

Look after it.
