Canon Powershot SD850 IS Compact Camera

      By Tracey Capen

Review summary: The SD850 IS compact camera performs similarly to the newer SD870 IS but has a smaller LCD, a lens that isn't as wide--and a better price.

      Canon PowerShot SD850 IS

      By Concise Review, January 2008
      Award: Highly Recommended!
      Award: Highly Recommended!

      Award: Highly Recommended!

Review summary: The SD850 IS (IXUS 950 IS in Europe) was first announced in May 2007 as a replacement for the Powershot SD700 IS. It constitutes only a relatively subtle upgrade. Visually the SD850 is virtually indistinguishable from the older model (only the color ...

Pros: Good resolution, excellent edge-to-edge sharpness, Useful zoom range (although no 28mm wide angle), Very clean results at lower ISO settings, Fast and accurate focus (although slightly slower in low light), Very responsive, Excellent user interface ...

Cons: Battery life when using LCD not brilliant, Slightly underpowered built-in flash, No 'A' or 'S' modes, generally little manual control, Auto White Balance performance under artificial light not brilliant, The usual problems of noise and noise reduction ...

Verdict: The SD850 IS is a typical example of what Canon does so well; a beautifully constructed, well designed and capable compact camera that doesn't break any new ground but does what it does with the refinement that comes from years of fine tuning and a ...

Canon PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: The Canon PowerShot SD850 IS ($399) is an ultra-compact camera featuring an 8 Megapixel CCD, 4X optical zoom lens, image stabilization, and a beautiful 2.5" LCD display. Contrary to popular belief, the SD850 does NOT replace the SD800 -- rather, it ...

Pros: Very good photo quality, low noise through ISO 400 (in good light) ; Compact, well built metal body ; Optical image stabilization ; Gorgeous 2.5" LCD display ; Has an optical viewfinder (a rarity in this class) ; Snappy performance ; AF-assist lamp, ...

Cons: Corner softness ; Redeye a big problem (though the tool in playback mode gets rid of most of it) ; Current zoom setting not shown on LCD ; Controls on back of camera a little small ; Can't swap memory cards while camera is on a tripod ; More manual ...

Verdict: So what does the SD850 offer over its predecessor? You get more pixels (of course), a new image processor, a sharper LCD, a redeye removal tool, and more

Canon Ixus SD850 IS 8Mp compact camera

      By Tracey Capen

Review summary: Sleek and silver, Canon's PowerShot SD850 IS exemplifies its Digital Elph line: solidly built, beautifully designed and sweet to use. One of three Digital Elphs we've seen, this model has a simpler set of features compared with its siblings.

Verdict: While the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS may not have the large LCD of the SD870 IS or the sky-high megapixel count of the SD950 IS, it is still a fine all-around point-and-shoot for most shutterbugs, and is a better value than its two siblings.

    Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS

Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS By Tom Coole (22/09/2007)
    • Pros: Weight and size plus build quality and zoom lens
    • Cons: Difficult to focus, close-up quality

Just the right image resolution and zoom (x4) but so far disappointing image quality. Its sometimes difficult to focus accurately and the exposure "system" leaves images either over or under exposed. Still playing with all the functions but so far not as good as my Ixus 400. Read Full Review »

    Canon IXUS 9NIFTY IS

Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS By Ricky St.Croix (02/09/2007)
    • Pros: Good quality pics
    • Cons: Annoying on/off button

If you can get it for less than £190, its worth a go. I wouldn't pay £250+. It does look nice though. Perfect for beginners and advanced users. Could have more shooting modes. It doesn't have a close up mode like my old camera (Kodak C875). Read Full Review »
