      Canon PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: As you can see, you may want a larger memory card.

Pros: Very good photo quality in most situations ; Small, elegant metal body ; Super fast performance ; Impressive movie, playback modes ; Has an AF illuminator lamp ; Above average battery life for a small camera ; Optional underwater case

Cons: Too much purple fringing ; Flimsy plastic door over battery/memory card compartment ; Would like more shutter speed + aperture controls ; Body scratches and show fingerprints easily ; Wish it had a 3X zoom lens

Verdict: The SD100 uses a smaller, lower capacity battery than its predecessor (the S230). The NB-3L has 2.9 Wh of power, versus 3.1 Wh on the old NB-1LH battery

Review summary: The PowerShot SD100 (Digital IXUS II) is Canon's latest ultra-compact digital camera, from a body design and lens point of view it is loosely based around the PowerShot S230 (Digital IXUS v) which was announced at Photokina last year. Although there ...

Pros: Good resolution, about as much as we could expect from an ultra-compact three megapixel, Good reliable metering, Low image noise at ISO 50 and 100 (ISO sensitivity higher than indicated), Good color response, better overall balance than most, ...

Cons: Limited zoom (only two times optical zoom), Lens softness at maximum aperture, can lead to 'blooming' of light sources, Some chromatic aberrations visible, Color shift of overexposed reds, No image parameter adjustment, No manual focus, Very 'average' ...

Verdict: There's no doubt that the SD100 is built to the highest standards, the moment you pick it up you know you are holding a solid and reliable camera.
