      Canon Digital Rebel XTi

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: The Digital Rebel XTi is the long-awaited upgrade to Canon's very successful Digital Rebel XT (see our review). Like the XT before it, the Rebel XTi (known as the EOS-400D in some countries) is an entry-level digital SLR, but that doesn't mean that it ...

Pros: Excellent photo quality (though see issue below) ; Very low noise, even at high ISOs ; Dust reduction system ; Large 2.5" LCD display ; Full manual controls, including nice white balance controls ; Robust performance, especially in terms of continuous ...

Cons: Images on the soft side at default settings ; Small, hard to hold body ; feels too "plasticky" in my opinion ; Below average battery life ; No spot metering ; No 2 second or custom self-timer (though mirror lockup is a workaround for the former)

Verdict: Note: the 18 - 55 mm lens shown in some of the product photos is not the same model as the one included with the Rebel XTi

Lightweight and user friendly - Exceptional intro into SLR

Canon EOS 400D By Paul Woodger (03/04/2008)
    • Pros: Easy to use, good 18-55mm starter lens kit
    • Cons: Feels a little cheap to hold

This is a great camera, I had a Fuji Finepix s9500 but was dissatisfied with the digital viewfinder so decided to invest in the 400D. You can integrate old Canon lenses with the 400D if you have them and the image quality is great. The standard lens kit is more than ample to start out with. The battery grip is a wise investment as the camera itself feels a little small and 'plasticy' to ho... Read Full Review »

    Canon EOS 400 DSLR

Canon EOS 400D By ANTHONY DRING (26/03/2008)
    • Pros: Robust, compact and very easy to use. Interchangeable lenses a bonus
    • Cons: None found yet.

It was a very slow progress for me from 'wet film' through a compact Pentax digital to the Canon. Having operated the film version Canon EOS for a number of years I found the transition seamless. The controls are intuitive but the instruction book is superb for anything you need help with. That I can continue to use the 28 - 70 mm and 75 - 300 mm lens is simply wonderful. As a keen aviator... Canon EOS 400D

Canon EOS 400D By Bill Jackson (20/03/2008)
    • Pros: Ease of use. Will accept all Canon interchangeable lenses.
    • Cons: After usng a diminutive compact, initially found 400D a little bulky

Having grown used to a digital compact my initial problem was handling. Once this was overcome most problems disappeared.

The facility to use the canon lenses I had, from my early SLR, days gave me a most versatile piece of kit.

Ideal for close-ups, panoramic views, night photography and the occasional silly-snaps. Read Full Review »
