      Canon Rebel T1i

      By Seán Captain

Review summary: In both still and video modes, the Canon's colors are comic-book oversaturated, so it's a good thing the menus are easy to navigate: A deep settings massage will slap them into shape. No such luck with the moiré problem. Close parallel lines danced ...

Pros: Creative Auto mode provides intuitive tools for newbies. Though there's no full autofocus for video, you can refocus manually while shooting. Offers some advanced image controls for video

Cons: Pronounced orange hue in most photos, especially indoor shots. Reds look weak. Outdoor pics usually come out overexposed. 3-inch LCD doesn't swivel, so you have to hold the camera in front of your nose while filming

      Canon EOS Rebel T1i 500D

      By Gordon Mah Ung

Review summary: Canon's original Digital Rebel 300D lit the fuse that started the sub-$1,000 digital-SLR war. With the "DRebel" now in its fifth iteration, it's hard to believe just how far this camera has come. The original DRebel sported a dust-sensitive 6.3MP ...

Verdict: The real eyebrow-raising feature of the Rebel T1i, though, is its support for 720p and 1080p video modes. While we once believed that DSLRs would never do video, it's now the top checkbox on newer models. The T1i supports 720p at 30fps, but at 1080p ...

Canon Digital Rebel T1i vs. Nikon D5000

      By Zack Stern

Review summary: Coke versus Pepsi. Mac versus PC. Canon versus Nikon. Among these greatrivalries, we can only pick out one clear winner. (Here's a hint: It'snot the colored sugar water.) In the latest Canon-versus-Nikonentry-level digital SLR (single-lens reflex) ...

Pros: Brighter, clearer screen. In-lens stabilizer helps hold longer exporsures steady. Strong overall image quality with great details. Screen dims when you sight through eyepiece

Cons: Video clips restricted to 5 minutes. HD videos look awful with camera movement. Screen stays lit when you look through eyepiece

Canon EOS 500D performs well, but remains an expensive step up to HD video

      By Dave Stephenson

Review summary: The Canon EOS 500D is capable of great results, but a wallet-draining way of getting HD video on a DSLR.

Verdict: Changing the metering mode now requires you to use the shooting settings display. The 500D also gains a Creative Auto mode, which breaks technical terms such as depth of field and aperture into simpler language such as Background: Blurred/Sharp
