      Canon PowerShot A520

      By Mike Kobrin

Review summary: Megapixels: 4, Included Memory Amount: 16 MB, Included Memory: Media Card, Media Format: Secure Digital, Type: Comp...

Pros: Excellent manual controls. Accepts conversion lenses. Smaller and lighter than predecessor. Good battery life.

Cons: Very slow recycle time. Analog controls aren't responsive enough. LCD could be a bit bigger. Disappointing movie mode. No on-screen help.

Verdict: There's plenty to like about this camera, especially the manual controls, but it's slow. Image quality is good but unexceptional.

      Canon PowerShot A520 review

      By Doug Harman

Review summary: The Canon PowerShot A520 might look a style icon compared with some of its brethren, but it is probably the ideal model for anyone buying a digital camera for the first time. It's simple to use, has resolution enough for prints of up to, say, 8 x10in ...

Pros: Great AF, build, lens and exposures combine with a nice price and smaller, lighter camera sure to appeal to anyone wanting a sophisticated 'point and shooter'.

Cons: Standard AA batteries (supplied) will last for almost 10-shots! You'll need to budget for a decent set of rechargeable AAs. Noise over ISO 400 is intrusive and the camera does not so much leaps from the starting blocks as crawl onto the track.

Verdict: One of the nicest point and shoot digital cameras gets even better.

      Award: Recommended!

Review summary: Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the PowerShot A520 is the replacement for the PowerShot A85, and continues the line of best-selling budget models that goes right back to early 2001 with the A10 and A20. The changes are evolutionary rather ...

Pros: Good resolution, Bright, vivid - though natural - color, Good edge-to-edge sharpness, Useful new 35-140mm equiv. 4x zoom lens, Reliable focus and exposure, Lots of manual controls, Excellent build quality for a budget camera, Very little purple ...

Cons: High noise at ISO 400, Focus can be slow - especially at the long end of the zoom, Flash recycle way too slow, Minimum two-second shot-to-shot time, Slow start-up

Verdict: It would be hard to find a more suitable first digital camera for the novice digital photographer than the PowerShot A520.
