      Canon PowerShot S50

      By Soham Raninga

Review summary: In the world of digital cameras, Canon is a name to reckon with. To be more specific, Canon has engraved its presence in the high-end segment like no other. Canon seems to be directing all its strength towards the high-end market, rolling out cutting ...

Pros: Superb image quality, Very stylish and compact, Good battery life, Feature packed, Great build quality

Cons: The cylindrical control pad can be tricky

Verdict: The S50 comes in two colours, black and silver. It has a sturdy, black polycarbonate body, covered by strong, brushed aluminum panels. The overall result is a very solid-feeling camera that exudes of quality and class. The PowerShot S50 measures 4.4" ...

      Award: Recommended!

Review summary: Just before PMA 2003 Canon announced the five megapixel PowerShot S50. This camera is virtually identical to the four megapixel S45. Indeed other than the five megapixel sensor, case cover, silk screen labels and embossed chrome '5.0 mega pixels' ...

Pros: Good resolution (up there with the best of the five megapixel), Good metering, nice tonal balance (more shadow detail), Good color, slightly too strong in some situations (can be adjusted), Control over cameras internal processing algorithms ...

Cons: Chromatic aberrations visible at wide angle or maximum apertures, Vignetting at wide angle and maximum aperture, Moderate barrel distortion at wide angle, Rotated CCD (in the camera I had for review), Nine-point AiAF not available in P, TV, AV, M or C ...

Verdict: Lets be honest I think we all expect more from Canon than to simply bolt a larger sensor into an existing design, but that's exactly what they did with the G5 and the S50.
