      Pros: Solid, user-friendly features ; 18x image-stabilised optical zoom ; Choice of two memory card formats

      Cons: Noticeably plastic body construction, Noticeably plastic body construction, Non-rechargeable batteries, Travel of lens throughout range could be smoother

      Verdict: Not a perfect showing for the S8100fd then, but plenty of hand-holding and that huge lens should still tempt tentative snappers to make the jump up from a pocket compact
