Nikon Coolpix 8400
By Jeff Keller
Review summary: This review has been completed using a production model Coolpix 8400. Product shots have been reshot where necessary, and all sample photos are from the production camera.
Pros: Very good photo quality ; Ultra wide-angle lens ; Superb build quality, save for the memory card slot cover ; Full manual controls ; Flip-out, rotating LCD display ; Very good macro mode ; LCD/EVF usable in low light ; AF-assist lamp + external focus ...
Cons: Performance could be a lot better ; No memory card included ; Above-average noise, especially at high ISOs ; Included RAW conversion software doesn't take full advantage of the format ; Manual focus feature not great ; no distance shown or center ...
Verdict: Continuing a trend that they started with the Coolpix 8700, Nikon has stopped including a memory card with their high-end cameras. Many people upgrading to this camera probably have a few CompactFlash cards already, but if you don't, you'll need to ...

Nikon Coolpix 8400
Review summary: The 8400's wide-angle zoom lens is a definite selling point
Pros: Picture quality up with the best
Cons: Saving RAW files takes an age
Verdict: The zooming action is pretty fast, with lots of 'in-between' positions for precise framing. The AF system is mildly disappointing, though. The hybrid external/internal system should minimise shutter lag, but the Nikon still took around half a second ...

Pros: Superb build quality. Excellent Image quality
Cons: Can be slow to operate. Bulky compared to its rivals

Nikon Coolpix 8400 Review
Review summary: The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a digital camera with a rather unique selling point. The Nikon 8400 has a 24mm wide-angle lens, which is currently the widest focal length available on any compact digital camera. This does come at the ...
Verdict: The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a fantastic digital camera in most respects, but frustratingly poor in a few crucial areas. As I said when I started this review, it is the only digicam to feature a 24mm wide angle lens. Other cameras offer 27mm and 28mm ...

Nikon Coolpix 8400
By Anonymous (10/10/2005)
- Pros: Wide angle, picture quality
- Cons: Ergonomics, vulnerable controls, card door, no spare batteries
This is great if you need a very wide angle and with a 1:2 Jpeg you needn't use RAW or TIF for most things. But it falls short on most other things. They didn't listen to ergonomic criticism of the 5400 and made it worse. The right strap lug is very irritating. Command dial turns easily and is rarely in right place for grab shots. Card door feels cheap and catches on clothes. Noise increases in lo...
