Review: Nikon Coolpix P50 digital camera

      By Gavin Stoker

Review summary: High-tech camera with retro looks

Pros: Better zoom lens than most, Better zoom lens than most, Fairly priced, Vivid, sharp images

Cons: No decent anti-shake, No decent anti-shake, Can be sluggish, No rechargeable battery

Verdict: The P50 feels like it should cost more than it does, and while it's user-friendly it produces good images.

      Nikon COOLPIX P50

      By Elias Plastiras

Pros: Has a decent manual mode for such a small camera, crisp and clear shots, no obvious chromatic aberration, no obvious lens distortion

Cons: Vibration reduction made our shots look too soft, it sometimes mishandled very bright and cloudy conditions

Verdict: Small and powerful -- thanks to an 8.1-megapixel sensor -- the P50 is suitable for almost all situations and it even has a decent manual mode to tinker with.

      Nikon Coolpix P50

Review summary: Despite good image quality at 64 ISO and its wide angle, the Coolpix P50 has difficulty seducing us due to its slowness and rather mediocre noise control. Also, the absence of optical stabilization strongly penalized its final grade.

      Nikon Coolpix P50 Concise Review

      By Richard Butler

Review summary: The Coolpix P50 is Nikon's attempt at a middle-ground camera: it's neither a point-and-shoot-only ultra compact nor a fully-fledged photographers' camera. Instead it's a pocketable digital camera that marries a sensible sensor to a useful lens and ...

Pros: Generally decent image quality (at lowest ISO settings), though nothing 'special', Consistently accurate metering, Useful lens range with true wide-angle, Nice use of materials, D-Lighting can make the best of difficult situations, Icon-based ...

Cons: eVR is no substitute for optical stabilization, Soft images with little latitude for additional sharpening in-camera, Lens on our test model had softness on left side of image., Sluggish performance, ISO range more ambitious than capable, Manual ...

Verdict: The P50 is a no-nonsense little camera.
