      Nikon Coolpix S1

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: The Coolpix S1 ($379) is Nikon's entry into the ultra-thin camera market. The S1's specs are just like the other cameras in this class: 5 Megapixel CCD, 3X zoom lens, large LCD, and point-and-shoot operation. Nikon has a few interesting features ...

Pros: Stylish ultra-compact metal body ; Large 2.5" LCD (though low light visibility could be better) ; Tons of scene modes ; Nice continuous shooting mode ; Useful D-Lighting and Best Shot Selector features ; AF-assist lamp (but see issue below) ; In ...

Cons: Too much blurring in the corners and around the edges of photos ; Redeye a problem ; Disappointing movie mode (poor VGA quality, slow frame rate) ; Weak flash ; Despite having AF-assist lamp, low light focusing wasn't great ; No optical viewfinder ; ...

Verdict: All of the cameras on that list, including the Coolpix S1, use proprietary lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are on the expensive side ($26 a pop) and you can't use "off the shelf" batteries to get you through the day like you could on a camera ...

    Who needs a cradle ?

Nikon Coolpix S1 By john bowcock (02/01/2007)
    • Pros: Light and convenient
    • Cons: Cradle

Nice and compact. Good pictures on the automatic setting. A tendency to "blur" on other settings. But what is the point of the cradle which is necessary for re-charging and downloading ? Read Full Review »

    CoolpixS1

    Nikon Coolpix S1 By Shogun-Li Thomas (28/12/2005)
    • Pros: Size of camera, picture quality, functions, looks.
    • Cons: large amount of data in menu.

Excellent camera. Basic functions very easy to use. More complex menu functions are slightly more difficult to use if you don't know the camera.
Size of view finder excellent for such a small camera. Camera is only slightly bigger than my credit card and is therefore incredible technology. Excellent picture quality. Cannot really fault this camera - very impressed. Read Full Review »
