      nikon d50

      By David D. Busch

Review summary: Performance and features that rival those of more expensive digital SLR cameras make the 6-megapixel Nikon D50 one of the best entry-level options.

Pros: Strong performance ; excellent image quality ; low visual noise ; simple modes for neophytes ; robust burst mode

Cons: Simplified controls sometimes clumsy to use ; small viewfinder ; no depth-of-field preview ; only one set of custom parameters ; RAW-file editing/control software costs extra

      nikon d50

      By Andrew Kliem

Pros: Brilliant images, unstoppable battery, great price

Cons: Button layout and build a little weak, not as robust as more expensive models

Verdict: The Nikon D50 is a bargain in the under $2000 range with image quality comparable to 8 megapixel models, brilliant battery life and a reasonable set of features.

      Nikon D50 DSLR

      By Gordon Laing

Review summary: Digital SLR The D50 is Nikon's answer to the rapidly growing mid-price SLR (single lens reflex) digicam market, offering 6.1 megapixel resolution and a 3x zoom lens for $1,749. As such, it's up against some tough competition from the likes of Canon's ...

Verdict: delivers images with 3,008 x 2,000 pixels and sufficient detail to make great-looking A4 prints. This may be a lower resolution than some compact cameras can provide but, as with other digital SLRs, the sensor is physically larger than those in ...

      nikon d50

      By Ben Long

Review summary: If you're trying to choose between Nikon and Canon D-SLR cameras, the D50 might not be such an obvious winner. But if you have been wanting to go digital but haven't liked the high prices, the D50's sub-$1,000 sticker should make it a slam-dunk.

Pros: Sturdy design ; excellent image quality ; convenient size

Cons: Interlocked controls make changing parameters a hassle ; no depth-of-field preview button ; no backlight on the status LCD

Verdict: Nikon offers the D50 body only for $819, the body and an 18-55mm lens for $900, or the body and both the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses for $1,304, though street prices vary
