      Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom

      By Jeff Keller

Review summary: The SP-500 Ultra Zoom ($379) is the latest big zoom camera in Olympus' lineup. The SP-500UZ is the descendent of the C-765/770 models, which were introduced way back in early 2004. Olympus was kind of a pioneer in the ultra zoom space, and now ...

Pros: Good photo quality ; Full manual controls ; Large 2.5" LCD display (but see issues below) ; Support for RAW image format ; images can be edited right on the camera ; Customizable buttons and menus ; favorite settings can be saved to spot on the mode ...

Cons: Sluggish performance when viewing photos in playback mode, or shooting in RAW format ; No image stabilization ; LCD resolution isn't great, neither is low light visibility ; Unimpressive continuous shooting and movie modes ; No diopter correction for ...

Verdict: The SP-500 uses four AA batteries, and Olympus includes four alkaline cells which will quickly make their way into your trash can. So, do yourself a favor and buy a set or two of NiMH rechargeables and a fast charger. They'll last longer, cost less ...

Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera Review

Review summary: Olympus SP-500 is a 10X optical zoom camera, meaning it is an ultra zoom camera, way above the average zoom of other cameras; it provides 6 Megapixel CCD, large 2.5 inch LCD display, full manual controls (including white balance and focus), and plenty ...

Advanced Digital Cameras: Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom

      By Richard Baguley

Review summary: The low-priced SP-500 delivers strong image quality, long battery life, and a powerful zoom--but it lacks image stabilization.

Verdict: The biggest thing about the SP-500 is its impressive 10X lens. But because the camera has no image stabilization, this long zoom can be a mixed blessing. In anything other than bright sunlight you may end up with blurry pictures because the long zoom ...

      Olympus SP-500UZ Digital Camera Review

      By Michael Gazzola
      Award: gold
      Award: gold

      Award: gold

Review summary: The new Olympus SP-500UZ is a small and feature filled 'pro-sumer' 6 mega-pixel digital camera. The camera is light weight but sturdy and still has a good balance and feel in the photographers hands. Although the camera is compact, it still has room ...

Verdict: The menu navigation is quite good with simple diagrams and a user-friendly layout to help the photographer find what they're after

    Good choice!

Olympus SP 500 By John Clarke (19/06/2006)
    • Pros: With 25 pre sets taking the awkward shots are a piece of cake
    • Cons: Lots to get your head around

This camera gets just about as close as you want to be to an SLR. With 10x optical zoom and none of that digital zoom to mess the pixels up, you can get in real close to your subject. Will even take photos in camera raw format. Amazing definition settings will allow photographs to be blown up way past A3.
This is a fun camera - enjoy. Read Full Review »

    Nice pics

Olympus SP 500 By Ben Jackson (13/06/2006)
    • Pros: It has all the manual features you could want
    • Cons: Fiddly to adjust lots of manual settings

This is my first ever digital camera, but the quality of the pictures are near my SLR. It's fairly small (especially for a 10x zoom) and very light, but fits nicely in the hand. Read Full Review »
