Olympus Tough Smart 1050SW Digital Camera Review

      By Katrina Putker
      Award: gold
      Award: gold

      Award: gold

Review summary: The extensive series of Tough Smart Olympus cameras are one of the best-selling varieties across the current digital camera market for a number of reasons: they are robust enough to withstand a variety of extreme conditions and yet are stylishly ...

Verdict: You wouldn't need to think twice before taking the 1050SW camping, to the beach, cycling, skiing, snorkeling, to parties, to nightclubs, on road trips, you name it. Nor would you hesitate to let children use the camera wherever and however they can ...

      Stylus 1050 SW

      By Paul Jasper

Review summary: If you're an avid explorer (or a walking disaster), feast your eyes on the rugged charms of the Olympus Stylus 1050 SW. This pocket-size camera can endure a torrent of abuse, whether it accompanies you on outdoor adventures, joins you on underwater ...

Pros: Excellent image quality Waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof

Cons: Lacks many advanced features Screen is hard to see underwater

Verdict: This is definitely a niche camera, but one that is very good at what it does. For shooting in extreme weather conditions, or simply surviving everyday bumps and scrapes, the Stylus 1050 SW delivers excellent photo quality with little fuss

      Olympus Stylus 1050 SW

Review summary: Earlier this year, Olympus impressed us with its waterproof Stylus 1030 SW, a capable pocket camera that delivers solid image quality. Moreover, its rugged, compact design can withstand the elements, including extreme cold. Trouble is, wearing gloves ...

Pros: Waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof. Built-in accelerometer and "tap controls" let you activate some features by tapping. Descriptive menus and features are very intuitive and helpful for beginners

Cons: Long shutter delay. Long wait time between shots. Sharpness weakens at image edges. Noticeable color fringing. ISO speeds 400 to 1600 are very noisy. LCD shows significant motion blur

Verdict: Waterproofing, ruggedizing, and a unique "tap-control" feature don't make up for subpar image quality and long shutter lag in this Olympus point-and-shooter.

Tough Olympus gets new tap controls

      By Andrew Kliem

Review summary: A FUNKY new control mechanism known as tap control should prove popular with skiers.

Pros: 3m waterproof and 1.5m shockproof, can survive in low temperatures, tap controls

Cons: Lots of chromatic aberration, extremely slow shot-to-shot and burst modes

Verdict: Unfortunately the Tough 1050SW is a bit of a step backwards in the otherwise excellent Tough series. Its extreme levels of haloing are problematic and the overall performance is downright slow. The tap control system is pretty innovative, however, and ...
