      RICOH CAPLIO GX100 camera

Review summary: This 10 megapixel compact camera has two unusual features - its lens and its viewfinder. The lens has a zoom range of 24 to 72mm (film equivalent) which is wider than other compacts and not as long at the telephoto end. The electronic viewfinder is an ...

Pros: The lens is excellent and the resolved detail is exceptional, helped by the sensor-shift image stabilisation. The wide angle end of the zoom is wonderful with very little barrel distortion. RAW images are saved in Adobe's universal DNG format.

Cons: Write times to the memory card are a problem, especially in RAW mode. It takes some seconds to write to a standard SD card, during which time the camera is locked and unusable. The RAW image is large - 14.4MB - and the write delay will stop most ...

Verdict: The Ricoh goes to the top of the list of cameras recommended for travellers to Europe. In fact this is a camera that would be handy in a photographer's kit alongside a single lens reflex for those occasions when a quick snap with an all-in-one is ...

      Ricoh Caplio GX100

      By Ellis Benton

Review summary: Ricoh has rarely jumped on digital photography's bandwagons and the Caplio GX100 is another oddity, combining compact looks and a 10-megapixel resolution with full manual controls, a remarkable wide-angle zoom and a removable electronic viewfinder

Pros: Sharp wide-angle zoom ; excellent manual controls ; solid pictures

Cons: Some shooting delays ; weak autofocus ; average image stabilisation

Verdict: An expensive -- but not over-priced -- compact camera that will appeal to enthusiast snappers bored with average lenses, average interfaces and average pictures. The wide-angle zoom lens in particular offers flexibility and competence in a fully ...

      Ricoh GX100

      By WDC Team

Review summary: A high-end 10MP compact with a wideangle zoom and the world's first removable electronic viewfinder

Pros: Raw shooting, 24mm wide end on lens, 'My Settings' option

Cons: Noisy images (but sharp!), Menu system

Verdict: The thing that's disappointed us with most high-end compact cameras is the lack of Raw capture for the more demanding user. If you're spending £350-£400 on a compact - possibly to back up your DSLR - this is an important feature. The Ricoh GX100 has ...

      Award: Recommended!

      Award: Recommended!

Review summary: Announced back in March the Ricoh Caplio GX100 is officially the successor to the GX8, but it could equally well be described as a zoom version of the flagship GR-D, as it shares a very similar design, feature set and interface. The GX100 has several ...

Pros: Excellent resolution, fairly good corner sharpness even at 24mm equiv., Unusual and creatively versatile 24-72mm equiv. zoom range, Low distortion for such a wide lens, Fast F2.5 maximum aperture at wide end of zoom, Dual control dials and ...

Cons: Noise and noise reduction issues at all sensitivity settings over ISO 80 - ISO 400 and up pretty much unusable for anything beyond a small print, JPEG output a little soft, especially at smaller apertures, Default settings produce rather 'over ...

Verdict: You've got to admire Ricoh, one of the oldest names in the photo market, for taking the kind of risks bigger players aren't able - or willing - to take, producing niche products that are designed by people who obviously understand photography and the ...
