I have used Nikons for many decades and have liked their product. I have two digital D50's and a D70s both of which are excellent and I can use my older AF lenses, especially the 35-70 2.8D. I have had excellent results. I have just purchased and used the new D80 and its kit lens the 18-135 mm. Yhe camera is ok. Yes, I get more megapixels and greater resolution but the body seems not quite the quality of the D70s. It's ok but not any better for the extra money I have payed. The lens is one of the poorest Nikkors I have ever used. The images are soft and at optimal F stop. I regret having purchased it with the camera which I suppose will turn out to be a fair investment but the lens is not up to Nikon's usually goos specs. If you buy the camera i suggest you forgo the lens or go with the 18-70 lens which is actually a good one.
